‘Terracotta’ is Italian which literally translates to ‘baked earth’ - its porous and durable characteristics mimic the ideal conditions for cacti and succulents and can withstand the ever-changing temperature fluctuations and lack of water present in arid habitats.
A love for cacti and succulents is an extension of a more sustainable approach to plant collecting, requiring less water as succulent bodies store copious amounts of it in their fleshy stems to survive in harsh and dry desert climates. As an avid arid plant collector, terracotta is an opportunity that marries both the philosophies of my ceramic practice and love for nature.
